Around Anguilla in 18 Holes Golf Tournament
The fifth Annual Around Anguilla in 18 Holes Golf Tournament was held at Cuisinart Golf Resort and Spa on December 10th, 2016 (See 2015 Tournament here). It is a fundraiser organised by the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACOCI). Proceeds from this tournament and accompanying raffle are in aid of the ACOCI Annual Scholarship fund at the Anguilla Community College. Each year through this fund, a student who has demonstrated financial need and met other identified criteria is awarded a full scholarship. The ACOCI scholarship allows the student to pursue an Associate Degree in Hospitality or Business at the Anguilla Community College.
Most Recent ACOCI Scholarship Recipient
Mirie Harris, who is the most recent recipient of the ACOCI Scholarship said, “As a proud recipient of the ACOCI Scholarship I am thankful for being given this honour and opportunity from both the Anguilla Community College and the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce. As a student, these opportunities play a vital role in making dreams come true. It has opened the door to my journey by assisting me in completing the first step to becoming a Human Resource Analyst. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Again I am grateful to the Anguilla Community College for encouraging me to apply and to the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce for choosing me for this award.”
The golfers
Golfers from both Anguilla and St. Maarten support this worthy cause. The golf tournament has garnered a reputation for being a well organised friendly competition. Prior to the start of the tournament golfers were heard engaging in friendly banter about whose handicap should be lowered or expressing confidently that their team would emerge the winners.
Closing Ceremony and Awards Presentation
The tournament is a Scramble and started at 9:30am. At 1:30pm, the golfers all assembled for the cocktail hour, closing ceremony and awards presentation. Most of the golfers socialised while a few waited in anticipation for Scott Delong, PGA to write the final scores on the scoreboard.
Lily Warning-Moses, Administrative Assistant, ACOCI and Coordinator for the Tournament chaired the ceremony. Brief welcome remarks were given by Mr. Carlton Pickering, Executive Director of ACOCI and succinct remarks were given by Professor Delroy Louden, President of the Anguilla Community College. Professor Louden thanked the Chamber for their consistent and dedicated support and gave an update on the construction for the new purpose-built campus for the Anguilla Community College which has a proposed start date for early 2017.
